The sitting volleyball competition at the ParaSport Winter Games in Whitby took another positive step in growing the game as a total of six teams competed for gold at the Abilities Centre. The Brock Niagara Penguins (Niagara), Holland Bloorview Children Treatment Centre (Toronto), Grandview Children’s Centre (Oshawa), Sinclair High School (Whitby), Pickering High School (Pickering) and Team Ontario Beach athletes and coaches suited up for the tournament.

With 85 per cent of the teams participating under the age of seventeen, it was Team Ontario Beach earning the gold in a highlight of integration praised by parents and spectators alike, while the Brock Niagara Penguins and Sinclair High School rounded out the podium finishers respectively.

Another winner at the event was the sport itself, witnessing a significant increase in participation since the 2017 ParaSport Winter games in Brantford, following the introduction of the ParaStrong grant supporting the development of the program. Through the successful delivery of fall and winter sitting volleyball house league programs, the participants became hooked and enter the Games.

Planning is underway to integrate sitting volleyball into Ontario Championships 2020 in Toronto with a possible test event in 2019 at RIM Park in Waterloo.
