From Volleyball Canada: The inaugural Canada Cup competition took place July 19-22 with an elite indoor (Richmond, BC) and beach volleyball tournament (Toronto, ON). Formerly the National Team Challenge Cup, the Canada Cup sees the next generation of high performance volleyball athletes contend for a medal as they represent their province/territory.

In Richmond, 35 teams competed at the Olympic Oval to showcase their talent. “Through the support of our provincial partners, athletes, coaches and team supporters, the event was a tremendous success,” said program manager Dawna Sales, “Working with Richmond Sport Hosting and the Richmond Olympic Oval created a spectacular venue for the first edition of the Canada Cup.”

The event is a critical piece of the talent development process in Canada with over 300 athletes per gender covering a four-year age span (15-18U) in the high-performance pathway.

In Toronto, the first-ever beach Canada Cup saw 16 20U pairs representing six provinces in the tournament at Ashbridges Bay. In addition to the competition, teams received a three-day training and learning opportunity that included National Beach Team Head Coach Steve Anderson, strength and conditioning coach Ryan MacDonald and Olympian Heather Bansley, all sharing their knowledge and experience. The athletes were familiarized with national team “language,” systems and skills for long-term success in the sport.

This year’s 20U Beach Canada Cup saw Ontario (W) and Alberta (M) taking the gold.

"We were very pleased to provide 20U provincial team athletes and coaches a taste of the Beach National Team staff, facilities, systems and philosophies,” said James Sneddon, Director of Athletes and Coach pathways. “We are looking forward to building this event in the future to provide more athletes and coaches with this fantastic opportunity."

The Beach Canada Cup is an entry point program to the Beach National Team pathway provided to 20U Beach Provincial Team athletes on an annual basis.
