June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day — a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.
At the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA), we honour the deep-rooted traditions of Indigenous communities and their enduring connection to the land, water, and sport. Today, we reflect not only on celebration but on our shared responsibility to truth, reconciliation, and action.
We acknowledge that volleyball in Ontario is played on Indigenous lands an in a system that best suits Indigenous communities. We are guests here — and with that comes a responsibility to support, uplift, and learn from Indigenous communities, both on and off the court.
Reconciliation is not a single day. It is a sustained commitment. The legacy of residential schools, colonial violence, and systemic injustice continues to impact Indigenous Peoples in Canada. As we commemorate this day, we recommit to listening to Indigenous voices, advocating for justice, and creating safer, more inclusive spaces within our volleyball community.
We encourage our members, clubs, and partners to engage meaningfully:
Celebration without education is empty. Solidarity without action is performative. Today, and every day, we choose to move forward with integrity, humility, and purpose.
