Throughout her years on the volleyball scene, Evelyn Holick accomplished many firsts in her life. Evelyn was the first female "National" level official in Ontario. She was the Head Coach for Ontario's first Women's Provincial Team in the first set of Canada Games. Her accomplishments and commitment to volleyball established Evelyn as the first role model for female players, coaches and officials in the province.

In her honour, the Evelyn Holick Award is presented annually to a female Youth Division athlete who demonstrates the qualities of determination, leadership, athletic ability, sportsmanship and fair play.

It’s our honour to present this year’s Evelyn Holick Award to an athlete who truly exemplifies excellence, leadership, and the spirit of the game—Sydney McDermott.

Sydney’s volleyball journey began at just nine years old and has taken her from school teams and house leagues all the way to the national stage. She has proudly represented Ontario and Canada through Team Ontario Elite, the U19 Team Canada Training group, the National Excellence Program, and NexGen Beach.

She’s a three-time provincial champion, a Grand Prix All-Star, and has even competed at the adult beach level—at just 16 years old. Sydney is now committed to Kansas State University to continue her volleyball career at the NCAA level.

But her impact goes far beyond her personal success. She is a mentor and coach to young athletes through Synergy Spikes, Pakmen Camps, school teams, and Leaside Volleyball Club.

Sydney McDermott embodies everything the Evelyn Holick Award stands for—excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to the growth of our sport.

The Ken Davies Memorial Award, presented to a male youth athlete who demonstrates the qualities of determination, leadership, athletic ability, sportsmanship and fair play.

It’s our privilege to present the 2025 Ken Davies Memorial Award to an outstanding young leader—Daniel Lewis from Pakmen Volleyball Club.

Daniel has been a steady and inspiring force on his team since his early days as a 12U athlete. As a setter and captain, he has guided his team to multiple national medals and earned individual honours like 17U Nationals All-Star and Grand Prix All Star from 16-18U. His athletic achievements include being part of several Team Ontario programs and joining the National Excellence Program.

But Daniel’s impact goes far beyond the court. He’s spent countless hours mentoring younger athletes, coaching house league programs, and leading with humility and purpose. He’s also an exceptional student and community leader, volunteering with church programs – including nursery care and youth service trips and is a Phys Ed Teachers Aid for younger students.

Respected for both his skill and his sportsmanship, Daniel embodies everything this award represents—leadership, dedication, and a genuine love for the game. He will continue his volleyball journey at the University of British Columbia, and we know he’ll make a mark there just as he has here.

The Scarborough Solars Award is presented annually to a minimum of two Ontario athletes who have been selected to, or who could, represent Ontario/Canada in international volleyball or beach volleyball competitions.

In just her second year at Western University, Madeline Pelosi has established herself as one of the top liberos in the country. With 235 digs and an average of 3.62 digs per set, she helped lead the Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Team to a bronze medal in the always-competitive OUA.

But Maddy’s impact goes far beyond the stats. Her energy lifts her teammates, her confidence brings calm, and her fierce determination drives those around her. She leads with her voice and her example, anchoring the team’s defence with poise and grit.

A Bishop Allen Academy graduate and product of the Ontario club system, Maddy earned the starting libero role as a first-year and has never looked back. She consistently ranks among the province’s best in digs, reception, and the hustle plays that don’t show up on a stat sheet.

Known for her relentless work ethic and passion for the game, she is now exploring opportunities with Youth Team Canada. Her coaches describe her as one of the most driven athletes they’ve ever worked with.

For her excellence on the court, leadership off it, and inspiring potential, we are proud to present the Scarborough Solars Award to Madeline (Maddy) Pelosi.

This year, the Scarborough Solars Award on the men’s side is being shared by two outstanding athletes.

It is the OVA's honour to recognize the first recipient, Cameron Chadwick — a driven, disciplined, and inspiring athlete with his sights firmly set on the Olympic Games.

Volleyball has been part of Cameron’s life since age 12. Raised by parents who played both indoor and beach volleyball, his passion runs deep. Over the years, he’s climbed the ranks of Ontario’s provincial programs and, since 2022, has represented Canada with the Summer Next Gen Beach Volleyball Team.

He’s competed at the U19 World Championships, the U23 NORCECA in the Dominican Republic, and the Halifax Futures event — each one fueling his ambition for the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games.

But Cameron’s impact isn’t limited to the sand. As a three-year member of the Guelph Men’s Volleyball Team, he helped secure a bronze at the 2024 OUA Championships. He’s a mentor, a culture builder, and a leader who gives back — coaching youth athletes and setting the standard for professionalism.

The Scarborough Solars Award will support his journey toward international success.

Congratulations, Cameron. We’re proud to support you as you chase your Olympic dream.

Our second male Solars winner is Markus Law-Heese — a standout indoor and beach volleyball athlete whose leadership and impact extend far beyond the court.

As a setter for the Windsor Lancers, Markus helped lead the team to a historic 18-2 season. He averaged 9.6 assists per set, ranked top three in the OUA, and was named OUA Player of the Year and a First Team All-Canadian.

But Markus’ influence goes deeper than stats. He leads with purpose and integrity, helping shape a team culture built on respect and authenticity. Under his leadership, Windsor received the Fair Play Award at the 2025 U SPORTS National Championship — a reflection of the values he brings to the game.

On the beach, Markus claimed the 2024 Adult Provincial title and a bronze at Nationals, continuing to excel at the highest level. He brings the same passion and humility to every environment, inspiring teammates and elevating the sport.

For his excellence, leadership, and vision, we are proud to present the Scarborough Solars Award to Markus Law-Heese.
