The expansion of the live-stream program represents a significant development for volleyball clubs in Ontario. With the addition of 20 cameras, support from CBC Connect, and an emphasis on accessibility and visibility, clubs will have greater opportunities to support athletes and engage their communities effectively.

The Pilot Program

In early 2024, Ontario Volleyball introduced a pilot project to integrate video capture technology into key volleyball events. The program, supported by CBC Connect, used a limited number of cameras to capture game footage, which was then used for analysis, coaching, and community engagement. Clubs utilized the footage to assist athletes in improving performance, help coaches develop strategies, and enhance fan engagement.

In addition to livestreaming capabilities, the partnership with CBC Connect supported seamless video recording and uploading, allowing clubs to share content on CBC Sports Connect. Games captured without Wi-Fi were able to upload via ethernet, with other connectivity options available to ensure flexibility. Training and guidance were provided by CBC, enabling clubs to maximize the use of their cameras.

The pilot program demonstrated the potential to significantly enhance the visibility and accessibility of the sport. During the 2024 season, 572 events were created on the Pixellot server, with the Indoor Ontario Championships alone bringing in 208,675 views from fans and supporters across Ontario.

Expansion Goals

The decision to expand the program reflects its positive impact on the volleyball community. The addition of 20 cameras will:

  • Support Volleyball Clubs: Provide more clubs and teams with access to technology that enhances player development and community involvement.
  • Improve Athlete Development: Allow athletes to review game footage and refine their skills.
  • Increase Accessibility: Enable families and fans to follow games through livestreams and on-demand replays.
  • Expand Clubs Reach: More visibility to for your club, your teams, your partners and sponsors and inspire more persons from your community to get into the game.
Program Details

With CBC Connect's support, high-definition cameras will be distributed to volleyball clubs and key venues throughout Ontario. These cameras will be used to:

  • Livestream matches for wider accessibility.
  • Allow clubs to review and analyze game footage.
  • Easily create highlight reels for player promotion and recruitment.
  • Build an archive of matches for long-term use.

CBC Connect will provide training and resources to help clubs maximize the program’s benefits. This includes guidance on livestreaming, video analysis, and creating promotional content.

Future Plans

The program’s expansion is a step toward equipping all Ontario volleyball clubs with tools to support their athletes and grow the sport. By making this technology widely available, Ontario Volleyball aims to promote development at all levels of play, from grassroots to competitive. The partnership with CBC Connect also ensures that the sport can reach individuals who cannot attend matches in person, increasing the accessibility and visibility of volleyball in the province.
