On this Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada. We honour the survivors of the residential school system, acknowledge the enduring impacts on Indigenous peoples, and remember the children who never returned home.
We recognize that reconciliation is not a single act but an ongoing journey that requires commitment, understanding, and action. The OVA is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued and respected. We believe in the power of sport to unite people, promote healing, and build bridges between communities.
Our commitment to this ongoing journey of reconciliation includes:
- Education and Awareness: We encourage our members—athletes, coaches, referees, volunteers, and supporters—to take time today to continue to learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Understanding the past and impact is a crucial step toward building a better future.
- Community Engagement: We continue to build partnerships with Indigenous communities and coaches to support programs that encourage participation in volleyball, providing opportunities for indigenous persons of all ages to engage in sport in an environment that can define as being safe, respectful, supportive and inclusive.
- Inclusive Practices: We continuously review our policies and programs to ensure they are inclusive and respectful of all cultures and traditions, working toward eliminating barriers to participation – not just in Ontario but Canada wide.
- Sharing the Good: We enjoy seeing our indigenous athletes, coaches, referees and partner organizations thrive! We remain committed to sharing the great work they are doing year-round with indigenous and non-indigenous programs equally, along with their individual sporting achievements.
We invite everyone in our volleyball community to join us in wearing orange today to show that Every Child Matters! Let us reflect on how we can contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society, not just today but every day.
