Calvin Leung Wins YRAA Officials Award

Calvin Leung has won the York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) Officials Award!

Calvin has been actively involved in Officiating YRAA volleyball for several decades. In the 2023-24 season he officiated league matches, tournaments and was head official for the YRAA Boys Championship and the OFSAA girls semi final.

Calvin is a Level 2 Indoor referee and a Regional Assignor within the OVA with many years experience working our events.

Calvin is a volleyball official. Not only does he referee YRAA matches, but is also officiating at many tournaments hosted by YRAA schools. Additionally, he was an official at the Girls AAA Volleyball Championship hosted by YRAA

Calvin is an extremely popular and reliable official. He is both patient and helpful with score keepers and lines judges. Calvin always arrives early to ensures that the volunteers are aware of their responsibilities and that the match runs smoothly.

Calvin spends time to greet coaches and scorekeepers. He really invests himself in teaching the scorekeepers how to fill out the scoresheet correctly. He doesn't demean them or put them down. He knows and remembers most of the coaches by name and is easily approachable. He is a fair and firm official. He doesn't let emotions interfere with his duties.

When officiating at Sir William Mulock during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Calvin actively participated in the event by wearing a pink shirt on the stand. Calvin routinely takes time to offer tips to younger officials at league matches and tournaments. Calvin is a huge asset to YRAA Volleyball and has been for many years.

Calvin tries to facilitate learning and growth of the game. Again, he really works with the students that are scorekeeping and doing lines. He gives them purpose and values their input and help. He is always available to give his input and feedback on players and games if/when requested. Overall, he is personable with the students and coaches, which allows for a more enjoyable experience when playing games.

The Don Carmichael / Dennis Herbert Award

This award is presented annually to a YRAA sport official who, through long-term dedication to high school athletics, demonstrates care and professionalism, while upholding the values of the YRAA and high school athletics. Don Carmichael was a YRDSB educator, department head, administrator and coach. He is also a past president of the YRAA. Don is also a passionate sports official for the football community. His service to the game extends from local community games to the CFL where he was part of professional football for many years. Dennis Herbert was a YRDSB educator, department head and coach. Dennis is a highly decorated basketball official having served in leadership roles locally in the York Region Association of Basketball Officials, most notably as Rules Interpreter for decades. He is one of two Canadians to be elected as the President of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials
