Beach volleyball and Canada - and in particular - Ontario athletes, has seen an explosion in notoriety and success around the world recently with the accolades achieved by the likes of Melissa Humana-Paredes, Sarah Pavan, Brandie Wilkerson, Sophie Bukovec, Heather Bansley, Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing. National Team athletes from Ontario have accounted for World Championship podium finishes, Olympic appearances and Commonwealth Games finals on top of main draw entries on the FIVB Beach Volleyball circuit.
The foundation for that trajectory for aspiring Ontario athletes is built within the Team Ontario Beach programs. These programs on the Team Ontario pathway come by way of annual summer camps and year-round training sessions.
In the last several years Team Ontario athletes have represented Canada at FIVB World Championship events - Ruby Sorra and Emma Glagau getting the highest placement in recent years with a bronze medal at the 2022 U19 Worlds in Thailand.
Canada’s first U19 World Championship Gold was achieved by Sophie Bukovec and then partner Tia Miric in 2014 as Team Ontario athletes. Bukovec entered Ontario’s beach high performance system as a Tall Maple (an integrated beach and indoor program for taller athletes), and then was the first Team Ontario athlete to dedicate herself to the Winter Full-time Beach program competing in multiple international age division world championship events in preparation for her career today.
Earlier in the summer, four Ontario athletes earned gold medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago, adding yet another feather in the cap with talent that this province produces. All four athletes had been involved in Team Ontario beach programs.
Having the opportunities to experience international stage early on can pay in dividends down the road when they represent Canada at the most elite events like the Olympics.
