As the month of August comes to a close, so to does the OVA’s beach competitions calendar with Volleyball Canada’s Beach Nationals serving as a final stamp for the vast majority of our beach players. Nationals, presented by Mikasa, occurred across to weekends, August 19-21 for 14-19U and Senior divisions at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto and at the Spanish Banks in British Columbia the following Friday to Sunday (August 26-28). The first weekend saw Ontario athletes sticking to home soil to compete with teams from Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba and British Columbia and one Ontario pair took the flight out west the following weekend.  

Ontarians brought their A-game after the Beach Ontario Championships warmed them up for another round. Teams would be standing across the court to see the same faces from weeks before, some hoping for a different outcome and others excited to play the duos from the other provinces. In the end, Ontario athletes flooded the podiums to cap off another season of beach volleyball.

OVA Beach Tour Wraps Up in Markham

For those who still wanted to keep their toes in the sand, Markham ran two additional weekends of the Beach Tour, hosting tournaments for 12U, 13U, 14U and 16U divisions.

This summer, the Beach Tour  increased its locations to 15 venues. These included the OVA locations of Ashbridges Bay, Barrie, London, Pickering and Cobourg with the additions Brampton, Kitchener, Leamington, Markham, Milton, Ottawa, North Bay, Tillsonburg, Ancaster and Belle River to reach more Ontarians who wanted to take part in the tour. The OVA had a total of 6,808 participants on the tour and ran 143 Beach Tour tournaments (not broken down by each participating division).

We can't wait to pick this up again next year for another great season of beach volleyball! The OVA would like to thank the League Coordinators, Beach Crew and referees for their work at the many tournaments this summer for making sure that everything was on track and the athletes had an incredible experience at the events.
