The OVA is saddened to learn that longtime referee, Ed Yu has passed away.

Ed Yu was a pillar in Region 6 and the Ontario refereeing community who enjoyed a career from the stands on indoor and beach courts across multiple decades. A friend, mentor, clinician and referee who called countless games in this province and across the country, Yu’s leadership and presence will be greatly missed by the community and certainly at events. His respect and discipline shown towards his peers and his involvement in adopting new refereeing procedures has helped prepare many referees in Ontario. Yu was in every corner of the refereeing scene and in the corner of referees throughout Ontario, cheering them on as they navigated the refereeing pathway.

From OVA Region 6 Referee Chair, Irena Zamboni:

There are just no words to describe the loss and void he leaves behind. While we were lucky to have Ed here with us in R6, he is well respected amongst his volleyball family in all corners of this province and country. Ed literally seemed - EVERYWHERE. If he wasn't training us on eScore, he was helping with clinics, mentoring, showing up to cheer those doing their upgrades and his peers... He was the first in the gym and the last to leave. You were 'lucky' if you got to do your own net-check before Ed got to it.

Ed cheered the accomplishments of others, no matter how big or small, as his own. Actually, that's an understatement. While parents, family and teams cheered fiercely for their teams during volleyball events big and small, we always had a fan in the stands too: Ed Yu.

In the meantime (rephrasing from Navy tradition) - Rest now our friend Ed, we have the watch.

In the link attached below is an obituary from Yu’s family. Any pictures of Ed can be uploaded onto the obituary's Tribute Wall.
