Ontario to enter Step 1 of the reopening framework – outdoor training is allowed

By Ontario Volleyball, 06/09/21, 11:45AM EDT

The Government of Ontario  announced on Monday, June 7 that the province will be ready to enter Step 1 of the Reopening Strategy, effective on Friday, June 11 at 12:01 a.m.

The transition to Step 1 will mean a lifting of restrictions across multiple industries, including sport and recreation. With the first step focusing more on outdoor activities, the province can safely enjoy sport and recreational activities, albeit with a modified capacity.

For the OVA and its members, the Government has allowed the following to occur:

  • Outdoor individual/team sport training (no games, no scrimmages) to be permitted with up to 10 people (coaching staff is included in the 10 person gathering size. Please confirm with your facility what it will allow).
  • Participants must always maintain a 3-metre distance.
  • Indoor team sport is not permitted except for high-performance athletes (Olympic athletes), social services and physical therapy.

Clubs that begin outdoor training upon entry into Step 1 can refer to the attached OVA Reference Guide. The OVA staff will continue to update the entire Return to Play protocols for Step 1 with the hopes to have it online by early next week.

Please note, the Government of Ontario has only released Step 1 regulations.  Thus, the information for Step 2 and Step 3 on the Reference Guide is listed as “unknown” at this time.   Further membership updates will be provided as soon as known from the provincial government authorities and official regulations on the next “Steps” of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopening Plan.

Update on Mask Usage

For outdoor volleyball, masks are required to be always worn by all individuals/participants, except by athletes while on court during training and competition. Athletes must wear a mask when they step off the court from their training and/or competition (when allowed by the Ontario Government).
