The OVA is pleased to announce its continued partnership with The Rules R, a gamified learning app that is custom-designed for Ontario volleyball participants. With its broad list of features and engaging interface, The Rules R platform will continue to serve as a fun method of understanding the rules of the game. The partnership will run through December 31, 2021.

Recent additions to the platform have enhanced the learning experience with more variety and visual appeal. These features include pictures, diagrams, video, review options and a 1v1 Challenge. In the 1v1 Challenge, referees can challenge other officials using this feature of the Quick Challenge module. Users play with the same set of questions. The new addition is an entertaining way to better understand competition situations.

Working with international referee and President of the OCP Group Guy Bradbury, the OVA has been using The Rules R since 2014 to bring the program to Ontario referees where it is mandatory for them to use in order to receive assignments and to attend Ontario Championships. In 2020, several new features were added and 475 of 495 active referees completed The Rules R. The resource currently has 605 indoor volleyball and 309 beach volleyball questions in its database with a COVID-19 module introduced in 2020 to highlight the modified rules and regulations in the OVA’s efforts to adapt return to play protocols.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many adjustments and impactful resources have been created to keep referees engaged to further their development. The Rules R has been proven to be a valuable tool prior to the pandemic and will be more helpful while the OVA membership navigates the virtual learning world.

“The OVA has used The Rules R as part of our referees development on both beach and indoor for the last six years and our athletes, coaches and referees continue to reap the benefits of the program,” said Kelvin Cheng, OVA Operations Lead. “We are excited to keep using The Rules R and some of the new features that The OCP Group has been able to provide us and we look forward to building on a tool that our referees can take advantage of. We thank Guy and The OCP Group for working with us and providing an opportunity for referee engagement in the province of Ontario.”

"The OCP Group is pleased to continue our relationship with the Ontario Volleyball Association. The OVA is a leading sporting organization in Ontario and Canada. To have the opportunity to continue to assist in the development of referees and improve the volleyball experience of all participants is a real honour," said Bradbury. "As sport moves into the return play phase of the pandemic a challenge will be to attract and support new and returning referees.  Since 2014 we have had over 100,000 user attempts using The Rules R and with the completely re-designed and gamified platform we anticipate that OVA Referees will have even a more engaging user experience that will lead to a better on court experience and assist in improving referee retention."
