In an effort to reduce the spread and exposure to COVID-19, the Government of Ontario has declared that a province-wide shutdown will begin on Saturday, December 26 at 12:01 a.m. All communities will enter the Gray (Lockdown) stage of Ontario's response strategy. These measures will be evaluated by the Government of Ontario over 14 days for Northern Ontario and 28 days in Southern Ontario.

With this announcement, there should be no organized volleyball activity until further notice. The OVA will not sanction any volleyball activity for communities in the Lockdown stage.

Citizens are to adhere to the regulations of the Government and the advice of Public Health Officials and do their best to ensure their own safety as well as those around them. Athletes can still practice volleyball in the safety and comfort of their own home and clubs, coaches and referees can utilize digital communications platforms to stay connected and engaged with each other. A comprehensive outline of Ontario’s Lockdown protocols can be found here.

For small businesses who will be impacted by the shutdown, the government will be announcing the new Ontario Small Business Support Grant. The grant will provide between $10,000 to $20,000 to eligible small business owners to support their operations in these hard times.

Businesses can be eligible for the grant if they:

  • Are required to close or significantly restrict services subject to the Provincewide Shutdown effective 12:01 a.m. on December 26, 2020;
  • Have less than 100 employees at the enterprise level; and
  • Have experienced a minimum of 20 per cent revenue decline in April 2020 compared to April 2019.

Additional information on the small business grant can be found here.

We must do our part to get the province back on track. The safety of you and your family and friends is paramount and with it being the holiday season, it can make the situation all the more difficult; however, if we are to return to normalcy and enjoy the activities we love so much such as volleyball, the rules must be followed during this lockdown. Please stay safe and healthy.

Members are encouraged to stay in contact with their local Public Health Unit and Municipality during this period.

Ontario Volleyball will continue to update the membership as further changes are made.
