Summer is upon us now and that means it's camp time for future volleyballers in the Ottawa Valley region. Spikes, a program focusing on the grassroots introduction and development to the game of volleyball, will see its first of five camps with nearly 200 campers enrolled take place this week.

After receiving a grant a few years ago from the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) the growth of the Spikes program in the Ottawa Valley area jumped from 28 kids to over 200 this summer. The Ottawa Valley program features kids heading into grades six, seven and eight with three sessions of volleyball scheduled for each day, introducing both beach and indoor volleyball to a new wave of eager campers.

It's an exciting sign for the years to come for the grassroots development in the region. Their success promoting and delivering the quality program has unfortunately meant the hosts have needed to close some registration due to the high demand.

The Ontario Volleyball Association's Spikes program offers the ideal way for children aged six to 16 to take their first steps along the road to enjoying Volleyball for Life. The program teaches the principles of volleyball in a way that is open to all levels of athleticism and ability, is participatory, inclusive, encourages physical activity and most importantly fun.
