Team Ontario Beach

Team Ontario programs are designed to identify and expose athletes to the beach high performance training environment. The objective is to create stepping stones towards future international and national team success. Identified athletes benefit from personalized monitoring and support that include services from partners such as Volleyball Canada, and the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario.

TEAM ONTARIO RED

The objective of this new program is to introduce younger athletes to a high-performance beach volleyball training environment. The program is a camp based program consisting of 2 camps that will run at the beginning and at the end of the summer prior to nationals. Athletes will leave this program having gone through an introduction to Team Ontario training methods, as well as various sport science sessions.

Training Camps: 

  • July 1-6 – North Bay (with all Team Ontario programs)
  • August 14-16 – Toronto (Pre-Nationals Camp)

Key Competitions:

  • August 4-5 – 16U Provincial Championships in Toronto
  • August 11-12 - 18U Provincial Championships in Toronto
  • August 17-19 - National Championships in Toronto

Number of Players: 12 Athletes per gender

Eligibility: Athletes must be born in 2002 or later

Selection: May 25-27, 2018 see High Performance Beach Identification page for details.

Program Cost: 

  • $1600 plus HST
  • To be paid by June 1st

16U Team Ontario athletes are also eligible to be a part of the Junior Fulltime Training Group for the opportunity to train as a fulltime athlete on a weekly basis. Please see web page for details. 


TEAM ONTARIO BLACK

The main objective of the program is to provide a high performance-training environment to identified beach volleyball athletes in order to prepare them for higher levels of competition. The program is camp based and consists of 5 camps that will run throughout the summer. Athletes will be exposed to Team Ontario training methods and will be supported by an integrated support team including experts in physical training, nutrition and mental performance.

Training Camps: 

  • June 8-10 – Toronto (Kick Off - Sunday OVA Beach Tour in Cobourg) 
  • July 1-6 – North Bay (with all Team Ontario programs)
  • July 18-22 – Toronto (with out of Province Teams)
  • July 31-Aug 3 – Horseshoe Valley Resort (Pre-Provincials)
  • August 14-16 – Toronto (Pre-Nationals)

Key Competitions:

  • June 22-24 – Youth Grand Slam in Toronto
  • August 4-5 – Youth Open Provincial Championships in Toronto
  • August 11-12 - 18U Provincial Championships in Toronto
  • August 17-19 - National Championships in Toronto

TEAM ONTARIO SENIOR (OHPSI)

The Senior Team Ontario program is a fulltime high performance training environment that will include athletes preparing and aspiring to represent Canada in U19/U21 World Championships, FISU Games and NORCECA/FIVB Tour competitions. Athletes are introduced and prepared for international success on the national team through a high-performance beach culture, which includes participation in international competitions, securing financial support, and learning to create and manage an Integrated Support Team as a fulltime athlete. This program is directly funded by the Canadian Sports Institute of Ontario through the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative Program (OHPSI).

Dates: May 1 – August 30, 2018 (fulltime training in Toronto)

Key Competitions: Personal competition plan created with coach including applicable national team trials events, out of province tournaments, OVA Beach Tour & Grand Slam events, provincials and nationals.

Number of Players: up to 12 Athletes per gender

Eligibility: Athletes are born 1996 or later

  • $1675 plus HST

22U Team Ontario athletes join the Senior Fulltime Training Group for duration of the Summer in order to train as a fulltime athlete on a weekly basis. Please see web page for program details.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do program costs include?

Program costs include:

  • Accommodations during training camps (eligibility for Toronto camps to athletes living +75km away)
  • Transportation to 18U Quebec Camp provided, athletes responsible for transportation to North Bay camp, Horseshoe Valley Camp
  • Coaching support during OVA Beach Tour, provincials, nationals, and key competitions (prioritized to teams with both players on the Provincial Team)
  • Support of Integrated Support Team: Nutrition & Hydration monitoring, Mental Performance Training, Injury Prevention, Yoga, Strength & Conditioning
  • Team Ontario Clothing

* Athletes are responsible for all tournament fees and registration.

Do I need beach experience to be a part of the team?

No! Indoor athletes who have never played beach are perfect candidates to for the Beach Team Ontario program. Beach Volleyball is a developing sport and thus athlete exposure to the sport is later than indoor volleyball. The Beach Team Ontario program is looking for athletes who are eager to learn and committed to their own improvement.

What are the minimum participation requirements?

The minimum participation requirements are:

  • Team Ontario Red athletes must attend both camps, participate in provincials and nationals.
  • Team Ontario Black athletes must participate in all camps, in Adult Grand Slam, provincials and nationals.

Do I need a partner or can I tryout by myself?

  • Athletes are not required to tryout with a partner as athletes are identified on an individual basis. However athletes appropriateness in choice of partner and ability to secure a partner for the full season will be taken into consideration. Selection of athletes will include a consideration for finding the appropriate number of blockers and defenders.
  • Note that athletes in already existing teams are not guaranteed to make the team or the training group together.  Team Ontario coaches will assist those athletes who are selected for the team and guide them on selecting a partner and securing one for the season.

 


TEAM ONTARIO COACHES  

Angie Shen, ChPC

Angie is an internationally experienced coach with multiple international podium finishes including being the coach of the 2014 U21 World Champion's from Ontario. She also supported Team Ontario athletes to a gold medal a the 2013 Canada Games and 2016 Senior Women’s Beach National Championships. Angie has been the OVA Beach Development Coach since 2009 and Team Ontario coach since 2007. She has her NCCP Advanced Coaching Diploma from the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario, and is an NCCP Advanced Learning Facilitator.

 
 Eddie Coleman, ChPC

Eddie is an internationally experienced coach at Youth and Junior World Championships, FIVB Opens, the World Universiade and Canada Games. In 2015, Eddie coached Ontario athletes to a top 10 finish at the FIVB Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eddie coached Team Ontario to a 2013 Canada Games silver medal as well as multiple Team Ontario athletes to podium finishes at national championships throughout the years. He is currently completing his NCCP Advanced Coaching Diploma from the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario.
