Thursday, August, 24, 2017 - OVA Beach Rules R 2017

We ran a TRR contest this Summer, similar to the one which was run for the Indoor Season in 2016/17.

We used a different test format this summer. The test was a series of Quick Quizzes comprised of 10 multiple choice questions (between 0 and 4 correct answers) with a 15 minute time limit to complete the test.

Out of all 41 active Beach Officials, 37 took part in the contest for a 90% participation factor.

We are very pleased to announce the contest winners here:

  • In third place was Diane Cochrane who attempted TRR QQ 255 times. Diane wins a Canuck Stuff Gift Certificate for $20.
  • In second place was Navid Vafaei who attempted TRR QQ 1,187 times. Navid wins a Canuck Stuff Gift Certificate for $30.
  • In first place place was Albino Pereira who attempted TRR QQ 3,369 times. Albino wins a Canuck Stuff Gift Certificate for $50.

As for the regions we broke down the ratios as follows:

  • Region 1, 2, 4 and 6 had each Referee doing 7.4 Quizzes per Official.
  • Region 5 had each Referee doing 16.8 Quizzes
  • Region 3 had each Referee doing 416.6 Quizzes each.

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 - Pre-Season Reminders

As the indoor season is about to begin, we have a couple of reminders for everyone!

Please take a few minutes to complete this official’s feedback survey on this past year: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07ee8nwkxsj3g6nogt/start It provides valuable information for us to help improve our officials program.

OVA registration for the 2017-18 season will begin September 1, 2017.  Please remember to renew your annual membership in NRS to ensure that your certification level is maintained.  You also need a current membership to be assigned and to be covered by the OVA’s insurance policy while working OVA sanctioned events.

While you’re in NRS (nrs.volleyball.ca), please verify and update any changes to your email and/or home address to ensure that it is accurate.  This is the primary system we use to contact our officials and is important for staying current within the OVA officials community.  Your home address is also important for sending cheques in a timely manner for working OVA events.  If your home address has changed, please also ensure that this is changed in Arbiter (www.arbitersports.com) as it is how mileage is calculated for all events.

Important OVA updates for our officials will be posted here: http://www.ontariovolleyball.org/officials/officials-updates
We recommend bookmarking this page and checking it periodically for any officials annoucements, news or information.  This will help to minimze the number of emails everyone receives.

As per the OVA screening policy, all OVA officials 18 years old or older require a valid Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening on file with us completed within the last three 3 years.  If you are unsure when you last submitted one, please contact me to verify.  Also part of our screening policy, all officials must submit the OVA Screening Declaration form annually (http://www.ontariovolleyball.org/sites/default/files/OVA%20Screening%20Disclosure%20Form_1.pdf) Completed forms can be scanned and email to kcheng@ontariovolleyball.org.

For information about receiving assignments throughout the year or if you're interested in an officials certification upgrade, please contact your Regional Officials Chair:

New for this year, officials interested in entering the Provincial Upgrade Program to reach the next badge level can register for an pre-entry evaluation in NRS.  Once the evaluation is complete, your region will follow up with you with your next steps!  Stay tuned for more information!

The 2017-18 Officials Handbook will be available online in September here: http://www.ontariovolleyball.org/get-involved/become-official/officials-resources  Please read it over as it contains important information about the officials program.

The OVA Officials will be using The Rules R again (http://ova.therulesr.com/) for the 2017-18 season to brush up on rules and game knowledge. Now is a good time to start doing quizzes to prepare for the upcoming season!

Tuesday, June 6, 2017.

We are currently accepting nominations for the Ontario Regional Officials Committee Chair position (currently Andy Cameron).  As we are behind on the timelines, we are accepting nominations until Friday, June 16, 2017 and an election will take place, if necessary, by Friday, June 30th.   Please submit all nominations to Kelvin Cheng kcheng@ontariovolleyball.org.

Region 3 continues to forge ahead as Albino Pereira manages to complete 623 quizzes in March - that's more than some of the regions!  With only one month left, Region 3 is sitting in a pretty comfortable lead but the other regions still have a chance to catch up!  Don't forget that there are extra points awarded to the regions with the individuals with the most completion as well as based on the average number of quizzes per individual in each region!  This month is your last chance to make one last push for the OVA Rules R!

Thursday, March 2, 2017.

We have reached the halfway point of the OVA Rules R Championship this year!  Region 3 really made a big push in February and have created some separation! Despite being the region with the highest number of registered officials, they managed to take the lead in the overall average number of quizzes per official.  However, with 2 months left in the competition, will they be able to sustain their momentum or will they fizzle out in March and April?  Full standings can be found here: http://www.ontariovolleyball.org/officials/rules-r-championship/2017
