NCCP Certification PDF Print

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is run through the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and provides volleyball coaching certification at five levels. Each of the first three levels are broken down into three components each; Intro to Competition, volleyball course and portfolio & evaluation. In order to become certified at a certain level, a coach must complete all three components.

The Intro to Competition coursese are not sport specific and are managed by the Coaches Association of Ontario, located in the Sports Alliance of Ontario Building. To enquire about dates and locations of courses, please click here. The volleyball courses and practical/evaluation components are managed by Ontario Volleyball. A coach must complete the volleyball course and Intro to Competition course before embarking on the practical/evaluation compontent and must fully complete one coaching level (Intro to Comp, volleybal course, and portfolio & evaluation) before beginning the next level.

The following certification components are governed by the OVA.

Level 1 NCCP Volleyball Course (Indoor and Beach)

  • Time requirement: 16 hours
  • The objective is to introduce the beginning coach to the basic skills of the game and provide a fundamental exposure to simple team tactics.
  • The clinic content includes basic movements, lead-up games, teaching basic game skills, teaching basic game tactics, learning basic coaching skills, ethics and more.

Level 1 NCCP Portfolio and Evaluation Requirements

The Level 1 Portfolio requirements will be met when a coach has:

  • A description of their coaching context,
  • An emergency action plan  (EAP)
  • Completed a practice observation form from observing a practice directed by a NCCP certified volleyball coach (a Level 2 or higher certified coach is recommended)
  • Verification of 40 training hours as a head coach 
  • Three properly structured written practice plans.

Upon completion of all portfolio assignments, a coach must be formally observed and evaluated by a NCCP Level 2 or higher volleyball coach in a practice setting.   The candidate must be a full member of Ontario Volleyball during this time.

Level 2 NCCP Volleyball Course

  • Time requirement: 16 hours
  • The objective is to provide the candidate with advanced technical and tactical experience of the game in a manner which will enable the candidate to apply this knowledge in practical situations.
  • The clinic content includes analyzing skill variations, theories and tactics of offence, theories and tactics of defence, skill training, physical preparation, match management and more.

Level 2 NCCP Portfolio and Evaulation Requirements Indoor

The Level 2 Portfolio requirements will be met when a coach has: 

  • Completed a description of your indoor volleyball coaching context
  • Created an Emergency Action Plan
  • Completed a Practice Observation Form from observing a practice directed by a NCCP certified indoor volleyball coach (a Level 3 or higher certified coach is recommended)
  • Completed a Match Observation from observing a match directed by a NCCP certified indoor volleyball coach (a Level 3 or higher certified coach is recommended).
  • Verification of one full season of training (minimum of 80 training hours) as a head coach
  • A full season of properly structured written practice plans (minimum 80 hours).  

Upon completion of all portfolio assignments, be formally observed and evaluated by a Level 3 Certified or higher indoor volleyball coach in a practice setting (A Level 2 coach may be used for evaluation in certain circumstances).  The candidate must be a full member of Ontario Volleyball during this time.

Level 3 NCCP Volleyball Course

  • Time requirement: 16 hours + 3 day camp.
  • Attendance at an OVA Coaching Conference and observation and education by a mentor coach at a Athlete Development (16U or 18U).
  • The objective is to prepare the coach to train a team towards volleyball performance. Two major components will be dealt with: ability to coach and volleyball knowledge.
  • The clinic content includes: positional play training (setter, left / right side player, middle player), annual / seasonal planning, strength training for volleyball, and more.

Level 3 NCCP Practical

  • Coach for two (2) seasons with a minimum of 80 training hours after the completion of the Level 3 Technical components# to become a Level 3 candidate, the coach must be observed by a Level 3 tutor who will report to the Coaching Committee whether the candidate is qualified to join the program
  • The objective is to tutor candidates through a season. The mentor coach will monitor three (3) training sessions (early-season, mid-season, and late season) and one match. Candidates submit practice plans and after observing the practice sessions, the tutors provide feedback, evaluation and grading on all aspects of coaching.
  • A grade of 80% is required to complete the component.

Levels 4 and 5 NCCP Courses

  • Level 4 & 5 are governed by Volleyball Canada and are intended to prepare candidates for coaching at a National or International level.
