Volleyball Thriving in Ottawa Valley Thanks To The Vikings

The following was submitted by Dave Dobson and the Ottawa Valley Vikings Volleyball Club.

To our friends at the OVA from the Ottawa Valley Vikings Volleyball Club:

I hosted a huge High School Junior and Senior Girls Volleyball All Star game here in the Ottawa Valley last weekend that highlighted many of our club players.

I invited the 11 high schools in the valley to send their best two junior and their best two senior players. The schools were divided into North and South teams. We had a best 3 of 5 match, complete with OVA officials and even spike and serving competitions after the first set of the match.

I invited in the local colleges and universities to be our honourary coaches along with the coaches from our top four schools in each division. The athletes even arrived in the morning and practiced with their coaches. Lionel Woods from Ottawa University came along with Everton Senior from Algonquin College and Tony Clarke from Durham College.

We had a pre-event march in with a bagpiper, the legion color guard, and Jolan Wong, Olympic Athlete from our Canadian sitting volleyball team. Local talent from the elementary schools even sung the National anthem. It went over really well!

Shown below is the entire group before the march in:

Volleyball just keeps growing here in the Valley and we now have more girls (100) playing club volleyball than there are registered in girls hockey - the first time ever for another sport to surpass girls hockey in the Valley!

We hope to run a similar event with the boys some time over the next five years.

This is the second year I hosted the event and we were able to raise $700 to help send our 15U girls to the Nationals later this spring.

Thanks for all that you do to provide our kids with club tournaments, the Provincials, Nationals, and the Beach program. We are so much looking forward to this summer!

We will be running the Beach program at two sites. In addition to Douglas Beach courts, the Alice and Fraser Recreation Association are building a huge beach facility for free to host the program this summer and to expand Beach Volleyball in the Valley.

Again this is thanks to the OVA, Kerish Maharaj (OVA Grassroots Coordinator) and all those who made it possible!

What a fantastic event! Thank you Dave and the Ottawa Valley Vikings for all you do for volleyball in Ontario!
