Titans Hire Bukovec, Launch Integrated Beach/Indoor Program

Thursday, September 7, 2017

The Scarborough Titans have announced a major addition to their coaching staff for the upcoming 2017/18 indoor season!

Fresh off her latest NORCECA win in Jamaica, Team Canada athlete, and 2020 Olympic hopeful Sophie Bukovec is set to join the Scarborough Titans coaching staff.

Sophie has been competing for team Canada since she was 16 years old.  Having had an illustrious OVA career, Sophie was recruited to play indoor volleyball for several universities and colleges both in the US and Canada.  Initially, she decided to begin her post secondary career playing for McMaster’s women’s volleyball team where she won an OUA championship and was named the OUA’s final four MVP as well as McMaster’s rookie of the year and McMaster’s athletic department female rookie of the year.  She then moved south to play at Long Beach State.  Following her successes on the court, Sophie realized that her heart was in the sand.

At that point in her career, Sophie decided the make the jump to training in beach volleyball full time and transferred from Long Beach State University to the University of Southern California.  It is there that she has made her largest impact on the world of volleyball, where she is a three-time National Champion with USC going 28-0 in her career.  She is also a two time All American and two-time Marks Scholar Award Winner.  For team Canada, she is a U21 World Champion.

Currently, Sophie is competing on the NORCECA tour and has also played in several FIVB events.  The Scarborough Titans are proud to have Sophie involved with several indoor teams over the course of the season and more than proud to support her in her endeavours both on beaches here in Canada and abroad.

Along with hiring Bukovec, the Scarborough Titans are very excited to launch a new 17U girls team combining indoor and beach volleyball into a single integrated program. Led by coaches Fraser McIntosh and Sophie Bukovec, this team will allow athletes to participate in the full OVA and VC indoor schedule while complementing their season with high-level beach training and competition over the winter months.

The Titans Integrated team will train three times a week at locations in Scarborough and North York, including Volleyball Canada’s full-time beach training center at Downsview Park. Tournaments will include all OVA 17U indoor events with the option of additional indoor and beach competitions both in Canada and internationally. Tryouts for the program are September 9th and 14th. For more info or to register please visit scarboroughtitans.ca.

Head coach Fraser McIntosh is an NCCP trained indoor performance coach and beach advanced development coach with over a decade of coaching experience. This includes Team Ontario Beach (18U boys head coach), Team Ontario Indoor (16U girls assistant coach), the CIS (RMC Womens Offensive Coordinator), and other programs across the country (OVA Grassroots & High Performance Developer, OVA Grassroots Master Clinician, Volleyball Alberta Camps Director, Team BC).

The Scarborough Titans are looking forward to providing a strong opportunity for both indoor and beach athletes with their new 17U Integrated Team. The Titans will be holding their indoor tryouts for the upcoming season starting this Saturday at Variety Village Community Centre.  Visit www.scarboroughtitans.ca for more details or email fraser@scarboroughtitans.ca.
