The Team Ontario December Camp was held this past weekend at the Haber Recreation Centre in Burlington. 23 boys and 24 girls from the 2017 17U/18U Team Ontario programs as well as the Youth/Select National Team programs participated in this high performance event. On top of the 3 on-court sessions, athletes participated in a culture & leadership workshop, attended a mental performance workshop as well as a nutrition presentation, and took part in a unique yoga session led by Lululemon instructors. The club coaches of the athletes were also invited to attend this development activity.
Beyond the technical and tactical skills, one of the main weakness identified by national team coaches in the young athletes joining Team Canada is the lack of understanding of the high performance athlete lifestyle. Through this camp, the athletes were exposed to concepts that will help them develop the self-managing skills that are necessary to succeed at the higher levels of volleyball. They will get to work on those skills with their club coaches for the rest of the season.
The athletes were very engaged and had a lot of fun training and learning alongside their peers from across the province. The camp was a great example of how clubs and Team Ontario programs can coexist and collaborate in the development of elite volleyball players in Ontario.
