The Scarborough Solars Awards are presented annually to a minimum of two Ontario athletes who have been selected to, or who have the ability to, represent Ontario/Canada in international volleyball or beach volleyball competitions. The Scarborough Solars Awards, along with a number of other annual OVA Awards, were presented at the OVAtion Awards Banquet on June 2nd. This year, our male recipient is Andrew Richards and our female recipient is Madeleine Garneau.
Andrew’s development in the OVA has helped him to blossom into
a high-performance volleyball athlete. A member of the 2018 OUA Gold Medal McMaster Marauders Men’s, team Andrew was named the 2018 OUA Player of the Year and was also nominated for the National Player of the Year. Andrew is driven to chase his dreams of representing Canada in the Olympics and winning our country’s first ever indoor volleyball Olympic Medal. The Scarborough Solars Award will allow Andrew to chase after this dream with a clear mind to know that some of the economic burdens of tryouts, travel and training costs are taken care of. Congratulations Andrew!
Madeleine is currently training with the Team Ontario Full-Time Beach Program. She is in her last year of high school and will attend the University of Toronto in September to study Kinesiology. She chose to attend a local university so she can continue with her training program under the direction of the OVA’s Angie Shen.
Madeline has competed in multiple trials for World Championships and NORCECA qualifiers. Last summer, she went to Hermosa Beach for the U19 USAV National Championships and in the fall of 2017, she attended the National Team tryouts and will be attending again in 2018. Just recently, Madeline competed in the U19 World Championship Qualifiers, as well as the Youth Olympic Qualifiers. The Solars Award will help cover some of Madeline’s training cost and assist her on her journey to becoming an international star. Congratulations Madeline!
