Monday, July 21, 2014

For the third year in a row Ontario teams competed in both men’s and women’s gold medal matches.

In the men’s tournament in Gatineau, Ontario 19U defeated Alberta in straight sets to earn a gold medal (below). Incredibly, the team won all 6 of their matches without dropping a set. Ontario 18U finished strong with a convincing 3-0 win over Manitoba in the 7th place match.

The Most Valuable Player went to Ontario setter Adam Anagnostopoulos and Brandon Koppers earned an All Star nod (below).

“It is always a huge honour to be able to represent our province and the OVA, to be able to cap off an amazing HPC and training camp with a gold medal was great”, commented Matthew Harris, Ontario 19U Head Coach.

At the women’s tournament in Winnipeg, Alberta 17U defeated Ontario 1 in four sets in the gold medal match (below).  Ontario 2 played a strong final match of the tournament defeating Quebec in 3 sets to finish 7th.

Michelle Chelladurai and Alina Dormann of Ontario were named to the tournament All-star team (below).

“We responded well to some adversity in pool play and were playing our best volleyball at the end of the tournament. I am very honoured to have coached such a special group of athletes and to have worked with a great support staff." Commented Scott Hunt, Ontario 1 Head Caoch.

The National Team Challenge Cup is an annual inter-provincial championship featuring the top 18U athletes (women - born in 1996 or later) and 19U athletes (men - born in 1995 or later) from each province.

Ontario Volleyball would like to congratulate all four Ontario Provincial Teams that competed at the National Team Challenge Cup (NTCC) hosted by Volleyball Canada in Winnipeg and Gatineau.

Each event is hosted by Canada’s men’s and women’s National Team Centres.  Along with tournament play, players receive training opportunities with Volleyball Canada National Team coaches while the provincial coaches receive professional development opportunities.
