The OVA's Annual General Meeting took place this past Sunday, December 3 at the University of Guelph Athletics Centre.
The purpose of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is to inform the members and to deal with the usual business of the OVA, such as Report of Auditors and Elections.
Be sure to view the 2016/17 Annual Report update for an update on the Association's progress in achieving strategic objectives in the areas of Operations, Facilities, Coaches & Officials, Programs, Competitions and High Performance. The report also features exciting accomplishments in indoor and beach volleyball, from grassroots development through youth competitions, all the way up to international events.
The day started with two coach development sessions which were attended by approximately 30 coaches from across the province. The sessions were How to Teach Read-Based Defense to your 14U to 18U Athletes with Chris Lawson, former University of Waterloo Men’s Volleyball head coach and Master Coach Developer, and Improving the Setter-Hitter Relationship with Brenda Willis, Queen’s University Men’s Volleyball head coach and chair of the OVA Coaching Committee. A short video recap of the sessions will be posted later.
While OVA coaches were in the gym honing their skills, select club executives gathered with Board representatives to develop terms of reference for the new Club Presidents Advisory Council. This initiative is designed to bridge perceived gaps in the OVA's governance structure as they pertain to club operations.
The afternoon was highlighted by town hall sessions where the membership was invited to discuss the Tryout Window Policy and Youth Competition Streams. Director of High Performance LP Mainville and Indoor Competitions Manager Carrie Campbell presented proposed changes to the policy as well as summarized results of the youth competitions survey before those in attendance broke out into groups to provide specific feedback.
Ms. Campbell states "It was fantastic to see so many members come out to provide their feedback. It goes to show that even with a diverse and distributed membership base, the entire Association is committed to continuing to improve competition policies and structure to the benefit of our athletes. We're eager to review the input and feedback that we gathered in the various breakout sessions and will look to make improvements based on that."
The AGM concluded with elections for open positions on the Board of Directors. The OVA would like to welcome new Board members Blair Mackintosh (President), Orest Stanko (Vice-President Administration/Secretary), and Daphne Choi (Director at Large). Parrish Offer was re-elected as Director at Large.
The OVA would also like to thank past Board members Amedeo Bernardi (President), Janet Cairns (Vice-President Administration/Secretary) and John-Paul Cody-Cox (Director at Large) for fulfilling their roles admirably over the past few years.
